Types of Glass

Annealed This is normal, everyday glass used in windows etc. It can be cut, drilled and decorated but it is not a safety glass and so is not suitable for critical locations such as doors. The glass has a natural green tint caused by the iron it contains. Standard thicknesses; 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 19mm, 25mm

Low Iron This glass is the same as annealed but it has been through a process to remove the iron, allowing the glass to visually clear Standard thicknesses; 4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 19mm

Toughened This is a heat process which Annealled and Low Iron glass can go through to strengthen it. The resulting glass is then up to 5 times stronger and conforms to BS: 6206 Class A This glass must be cut and drilled before the toughening process, although some decorative effects can be done afterwards When broken, this glass will shatter into small, blunt edged fragments which can reduce the risk of personal injury.

Laminated Glass This is a Safety Glass and conforms to BS: 6206 Class B. It is is produced using two or more sheets of glass permanently bonded together with a clear resin interlayer. This can be cut, drilled and decorated. When broken, it reduces the risk of personal injury as any fragments remain in place. Standard thicknesses; 4.8mm, 6.4mm, 8.8mm, 10.8mm
